The power of media to trigger the negative was illustrated recently when a cartoon image in Denmark triggered riots, death, and negative emotions around the world. Is it possible to use media to trigger pro-social, positive emotions that amplify character strengths and virtues without resorting to fundamentalism or “beating people over the head with virtue?”
New technologies are changing the way that we interact with each other. Interactive games provide new environments to interact. The internet is creating many new avenues for narrowcasting information to targeted audience. We are gaining new understanding of networks and the network effect which could open the door to new models of virtuous circles to make the world a better place. Are there ways of using technology to channel positive emotional responses into prosocial behaviors?
